Did you know that over half of pets in most households are overweight? According to a survey conducted by The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 58.6% of dogs and 58.2% of cats are either overweight or obese. Obesity can cause a host of health issues for your pet, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
So how can you prevent your pet from gaining too much weight?
Talk to your vet
Whether you’re trying to help an already heavy pet lose weight or maintain, your vet is a source of expert advice. They can help you understand what an ideal weight is for your pet and help you design a feeding regimen that will keep your pet healthy.
Get them going
One of the easiest ways to maintain a healthy weight for your cat or dog is to keep them active. For dogs, this might mean a long walk or run, games of catch or agility training. For your cat, make sure you give them ample play time. This can come in the form of interactive toys, climbing apparatuses or some one on one time.
Keep an eye on snacks
We love our pets and giving them treats is an easy way to show them how much we care. If we’re not careful, though, those treats can add up to extra pounds quickly! Try smaller, lower calorie training treats or limiting the amount of treats you give to your pet.
